Deafness Awareness Training (DAT) is a specialised program, delivered by accredited trainers who hold a minimum of Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, to provide a real insight into the Deaf community.

Did you know that 95% of deaf children are born to parents who can hear and that 70% of lip-reading is guesswork?

Learning about Deaf culture is an important first step in breaking down the communication barriers between the hearing and deaf.

Whether you want to improve your service delivery to deaf clients or ensure that your deaf employee is included in the team, our customised DAT will give you the information and practical tips to improve your interactions with deaf people.

Through our DAT you can:

  • Understand the differences between deaf, and hard of hearing people.
  • Learn some basic Australian Sign Language (Auslan) and about the structure and its history.
  • Learn about how to make your workplace or environment more accessible.
  • Some communication tools to assist in talking with deaf people or those with hearing loss, and just generally improve your skills.

If you have a deaf employee, you may be eligible to have the costs of this training reimbursed by the Australian Government through the Employment Assistance Fund. The EAF provides Government funding to assist employers  to purchase a range of work related modifications and services for people with disabilities.
